The component R is partially filled with alcohol and a low pressure gas (or alcohol vapour). In the question, R wasn't at the top it was a bit lower from the gas space; even if the answer isn't alcohol for the component R, it should be low pressure gas or alcohol vapour and not air.

The six's maximum and minimum thermometer does not contain two volumes of alcohol. I think the question is faulty. it should be Alcohol , Mercury & Air in the respective order of P , Q , R
