An Inspector Calls
An Inspector Calls is a compelling three-act drama by J.B. Priestley, set in 1912. It centres on the prosperous, upper-middle-class Birling family, whose celebration is interrupted by the arrival of the mysterious Inspector Goole. The Inspector investigates the suicide of a young working-class woman, Eva Smith, and in doing so, reveals how each family member contributed to her downfall through their selfish actions and lack of social responsibility. The play is a sharp critique of Edwardian society's class hypocrisy and individualistic mindset, arguing for collective social responsibility.
