Let x represent the first number; ----- (I)

Then, the other is (5 − x) , since their sum is 5 and their product is 14 ----- (II)

x(5 − x) = 14 ----- (III)

5x − x2 = 14 ----- (IV)

x2 − 5x − 14 = 0 ----- (V)


In line (IV), OP makes an error when moving the x^2 and 5x to the other side of the equation, hence making the quadratic equation to have Imaginary Roots.
