Here is an explanation:

(2*3^1 + 0*3^0)^2 - (1*3^1 + 1*3^0)^2

(6 + 0)^2 - (3 + 1)^2

6^2 - 4^2

36 - 16 = 20 (base 10)

convert back to base three

20/3 = 6 R2

6/3 = 2 R0

2/3 = 0 R2
