2. French
3. Fulfulde
4. English
5. Arabic (Fulfulde, English and Arabic)

UI: offers the course with Yoruba

IMSU : offers the course with Igbo

Subject Combination / JAMB UTME Requirements


In UTME, please note that English Language is Compulsory for this course. Therefore, the three (3) other JAMB UTME subject combination needed to study Linguistics under the Faculty of Arts & Humanities in the above listed universities include;

Any Language and two (2) other subjects.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA accepts two (2) Arts subjects and any other subject, and for Linguistics/Yoruba they require any Language and two (2) other subjects.

(ii) BSU and KWASU  require Literature in English plus any other two (2) subjects

(iii) DELSU accepts one Arts subject and any other two from Arts and Social Sciences.

(iv) UI requires any Language preferably an African Language, Literature in English and one other Arts subject or Social Science subject.

(v) FUOYE  requires one Arts and two (2) other subjects.

(vi)  UNIMAID requires any three (3) subjects.

(vii) UNIOSUN accepts any three (3) Arts subjects.

(viii) UNIZIK and UNILORIN require one Arts subject and any two (2) subjects from Arts/Social Sciences.

(ix) UNIUYO requires Literature in English and any other two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects.

(x) UNILORIN requires any Language other than English Language and two (2) other Arts/Social Science/Sciences. 

O'Level Requirements


The O'level subject combination and requirements needed to study Linguistics;

You require;

Five (5) SSCE credit passes including English Language.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics and any other language, and for Linguististics/Yoruba they require five ‘O’ Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics and Yoruba.

(ii) BSU requires five (5) ‘O’ Level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences including Literature in English.

(iii) DELSU requires five (5) credit level passes at SSCE/NECO/GCE ‘O’ Level which may include Mathematics, English Language, four other subjects from Arts and Social Science.

(iv) EBSU requires 'O' Level credit pass in Mathematics and 'O' Level credit pass in Nigerian Language will be an advantage.

(v) UI and UNILORIN require ‘O’ Level credit passes in Arts and Social Sciences. UNILORIN requires at least one Nigerian Language or Literature in English and one other Arts subject.

(vi) UI  requires five (5) or six (6) 'O' Level credit passes at one or two (2) sittings to include English Language, Arts and any other two (2) subjects. ‘O’ Level Credit passes in African Language and Mathematics will be an advantage.

(vii) UNILORIN requires Five ‘O’ level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, one Natural Language and two subjects from Arts/Social Science/Sciences. UNILORIN requires at least one Natural Language and two other subjects from Arts/Social Science/Sciences.

(viii) KWASU requires 'O' Level credit passes in Literature in English, any other three (3) Arts/Social Science/Science subjects plus ‘O’ Level pass in Mathematics.

(ix) FUOYE requires five (5) SSC credit passes to include English Language and any other Arts, Social Sciences, Sciences and credit in any other Language subject. Note that credit in mathematics is not required.

(x) UNIOSUN and UNUYO require 'O' Level credit pass in Literature in English.

(xii) UNN - as in Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian Languages.

Direct Entry Requirements


These are the conditions you need to fulfill to gain Direct Entry admission to study Linguistics, if you don't intend to use UTME.

You require;

Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes or NCE to include any Language, preferably an African Language.

SPECIAL CONSIDERATION (WAIVER) REMARKS

(i) AAUA accepts NCE credit/Merit in Yoruba, Mass Communication and Journalism.

(ii) BSU accepts two (2) NCE/ ‘A’ Level passes to include English Language, French or any African Language and one other Arts subject.

(iii) UNICAL accepts ND/NCE in Linguistics, Foreign Language or any Nigerian language.

(iv) EKSU requires two (2) 'A' Level passes or NCE credit in Arts, Social Sciences or Sciences to include any language preferably a Nigerian Language.

(v) UI accepts:

a) Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes to include any Language preferably an African Language and another Arts or Social Science subject.

b) NCE to include any Language preferably an African language and another Arts or Social Science subject at credit or merit level.

NOTE A certified knowledge of another language other than English Language will be an added advantage. It is also an advantage if the UTME or Direct Entry subjects include Literature in English. 

(vi) UNILORIN accepts At least two ‘A’ level passes or NCE to include any Language, preferably one Natural Language and any other Arts/Social Science/Sciences Subject. UNILORIN accepts Diploma in Linguistics from an accredited Nigerian University.

(vii) UNILORIN and UI require 'A' Level or NCE merit in the Arts, Social Sciences or Science subjects provided one of the subjects is in the Social Sciences.

(viii) UNIJOS - No Direct Entry.

(ix) DELSU:

a) Candidate must have at least a merit pass in French and one other Art subject at the NCE level

b) GCE A/L passes should include French and one other Arts subject.

c) Certified Diploma in French from a recognized Institute like the Nigerian French Language Village and the likes will be accepted in place of ‘A’ Level French.

(x) UNIOSUN requires ‘A’ Level pass in Literature in English.  It also accepts ND lower credit Mass Communication and approved equivalent in Communication programme.

(xi) UNN - as in Linguistics, Igbo and other Nigerian Languages.

(xii) UNIUYO accepts NCE merit in any Nigerian Language.

(xiii) FUOYE requires two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Arts Social Science e.g Economics, Geography and Commerce.
