(a) Define the term ecosystem.
(b) Describe the main components of the ecosystem citing two examples of each.
(c) Explain two ways in which the components of the ecosystem are interdependent.
(a) Definition of the Term Ecosystem: It is the interaction between and among, living organisms and their physical environment (or non-living things)
(b) Main Components of the Ecosystem and their Examples: Abiotic:-the non-living component or the physical component-examples of the abiotic component are soil, water, gases, sunlight, etc
Biotic:-the living or biological component -examples of the biotic component are animals, plants, saprophytes, birds, parasites, fish, etc.
(c) Ways in which the Components of the Ecosystem are Interdependent: Water cycle illustrates the interdependence between the components -Carbon cycle illustrates the interdependence between the components- Nitrogen cycle illustrates the interdependence between. the components -All human activities are mainly carried out on land -Humans return to the land/soil after death -Soil provides habitat for living organisms-When organisms die, they enrich the soil-Food produced by the use of sunlight and water are taken by animals-Animals die to return humus to the abiotic component-Animals draw oxygen from abiotic components and release carbon dioxide to plants which utilize the carbon dioxide and release oxygen back to the abiotic.
