Explanation

(A) CHARACTERISTIC FEATURES OF THE TROPICAL CONTINENTAL CLIMATE

1. The savanna lands are hot all year round.

2. Summer temperatures are between 32°C and 35°C.

3. Annual temperature range of 11°C but increases as one moves away from the equatorial regions .

4.Winter temperatures are around 27°C.

5. Daily range of temperature is great (28°C) and

6. Days are hot and nights are cold due to cloudless skies.

7. Rainfalls in summer only and conventional in nature.

8. Rainy season is from May to September in the Northern hemisphere while in the Southern hemisphere the fainy season is from October to March.

9. Trade wind is predominant and low humidity less than 30%.

10. Rainfall varies within the region

11. Rainfall decreases from equatorial region polewards towards the desert fringes.

(B) THE SAVANNAH VEGETATION

(i) Tall grasses and clumps of short trees.

(ii) Trees are scattered and do not grow very tall.

(iii) Trees are hard, twisted and thorny.

(iv) Trees have umbrella-shape to protect the roots from the sun and grasses are between 1% - 2 metres tall.

(v) Grasses are stiff, dry and yellow in the long dry season.

(vi) The tallest variety is the elephant grass and the grasses are green in summer (rainy season).

(vii) The trees are deciduous

(viii) Some common trees are baobab, eucalyptus. kapok, shea butter. isoberlina etc.
