A geographical account of bush fallowing in West Africa under:

(a) Land Preparation:

(i) Bush clearing/ brushing

(ii) Cleared vegetation cover allowed time to dry

(iii) It is burnt

(iv) Making of mounds or ridges for planting

(v) Use of cutlasses and hoes

(b) Crops:
(i) Cereals, e.g maize, millet rice, guinea corn, etc

(ii) Root crops e.g yam, cassava, cocoyam, etc

(iii) Cash crops, e.g cocoa, cotton, groundnut etc

(iv) Berry, e.g tomatoes

(c) Advantages;

(i) Provision of variety of crops

(ii) Checks erosion as crops are interplanted

(iii) Cheap to operate

(iv) Checks crops disease

(v) Soil nutrient replenished naturally

(vi) Soil matures for another cropping

(viii) Control of growth of weeds

(d) Disadvantages:

(i) Wastes a lot of land

(ii) System is labour intensive

(iii) Does not allow for mechanization

(iv) Hastens soil deterioration

(v) Destruction of economic trees

(vi) Low crop yield

(viii) Farm-holds are small
