The collective stories of these migrants demonstrated that moving abroad (the "ja pa" phenomenon) involves significant struggles. Hope was abandoned by his wife and lost his sponsorship. Akindele described the exhaustion of working "for every dime" and every "cent," noting there is no easy job in America. Sola lived in cramped, non-furnished housing and changed jobs frequently just to survive. These tales can be found in chapter 3 of the novel.
