The Answer is D, "in a masterky way"
Here are the reasons,
For the word "so" and "such" should be avoided when;
1. "That" isn't used in the sentence
2. When an indefinite article is placed "so" shouldn't be used, but "such" should be used. eg She is such a good girl that her parents admire her is correct

The answer needs alteration,it seems quite wrong,it can't be 'in such a masterly way' without any continuation that starts with either that,a or an
in fact heritage was quite wrong cuz the sentence is the writer analyzes the story IN SUCH A MISERLY WAY then THAT PEOPLE WERE CRYING OR WHATEVER MAY COME AFTER it
Option C is accurate . When you have So or Such following an adjective + a /an . The Clause That should be avoided. Example
We have masterly which is an adjective & a when we look at option C ( in such * a Mastery* way ) Hence that will be avoided.
