One of the rules of WORD STRESS states that, if a word ends in 'IC', 'ION', 'IAL', 'IOUS' or 'IAN', stress the second syllable from the end of the word. Examples are re-si-DEN-tial, pre-pa-RA-tion, sta-ti-STI-tian, etc.
