C is correct because, the sentence is saying, ''if i had gone there, i would have returned early''.

c is correct, because thus is an unreal conditional clauses. Why, because it has a penst tense as it verb. And fir unreal statement the verbs in the two clauses of the statement should be in past tense.
but for real statement the verb are to be in present tense

because the first verb came as a conditional case, so according to what we call verb sequence, the other verb must also came in a conditional form.
