This is a third conditional sentence (past unreal situation).
Structure:
If + had + past participle → would have + past participle
If clause: had been caught
Main clause: would have been lynched
It talks about something that did NOT happen in the past
Whenever you see “would have”, look for “had” in the if-clause.
