The selected answer is wrong:
a few is use for many people while few is use for small people example if there are 20 student in a class and only 4 were present that is (few student) but if 16 are present that is (a few)

Few emphasises the lack of something. So few is the most appropriate. Not little, it's used for uncountable nouns.

so we cannot say a few student because according to the sentense it tell us that as simple as the problem just small of them are able to solve it so few is the best answer

'Few' is used for positive & impressive outcome, while 'a few' is used for negative & unimpressive outcome

"A Few" indicates they were many but just few had it right
A few of them Failed
Means the was mass success

The selected answer is wrong:
Thats incorrect, Few denote lack of something while "a few" denote not enough... In other words you cannot say "few students could solve it" that meant not none of them solved it... The answer is "a few" D
