few and a few are both used with CONUNTABLE NOUNS.
a few : is used in a postive way to mean even if its small it is enough or managable
few : on the other hand is used in a negative sense to mean its too small and wont be enough
e.g
a few people attended the party even tho it rained ( a positive way)
this means the people that attended where small but enough
* the party was cancelled because few people attented.
it means that the people that attended this party was not enough. ( a negative way)

in the question the lecture was cancelled (something negative) so few is used .
