Pls this answer is wrong, the past tense “knocked“ should correspond with the past tense “had“. Pls u guys should be careful so that u make learners fail.

i think the answer to this question should be option b.
my reason: the verb KNOCKED is in the past tense
the second verb required should be the verb in its past form not past participle or past perfect
we use this past perfect when the question goes like this
i WOULD HAVE knocked at his door, but he HAD already left.
