The option myschool chose is wrong! Option A is NOT the answer. the question clearly said "opposite in meaning"
The correct answer should be option B

The option opposite in meaning to "nipped it in the bud" is:
D. promoted it.
"Nipped it in the bud" means to stop something before it develops, so "promoted it" (which means to encourage or support its development) is the opposite.
