yeah C is correct with qualifies THE SON as an in-animate object hence cannot make them two (plural)...just same as somebody travelling with a handbag are not travelling together but is travelling with her handbag.

"is" , is use as singular
while "are" is use as plural
why using" is" for two peoples

The apparent correct answer is option c, is. I feel that this is wrong and option d should be the correct answer.
