Thomas Malthus, an English economist, proposed that while food production increases at an arithmetic rate (1, 2, 3, 4, 5 ... ),
population increases at a geometric rate (1, 2, 4, 8, 16 ... ). This is known as the Malthusian Theory of Population. According to this
theory, if left unchecked, the population would exceed the availability of food resources.
