The account of Jeremiah’s confrontation by God in the deepest zone of his being is given in the form of a dialogue. He did not receive his call to the prophetic ministry in the midst of a temple filled with brilliant light or surrounded by strange heavenly creatures. “The revelation came to him not from cloven skies, or out of the midst of the thunders of the heavens.”[39] Instead of the spectacular, Jeremiah describes the objects or events of common daily experience as the starting point for his perception of the divine truth.
If Jeremiah’s experience took the form of a vision, it was a “calm meditative vision” that was not accompanied by any spectacular phenomena. It was an experience with God on life’s way.
