In the Book of Jonah 2:1–9 (RSV), while Jonah was in the belly of the fish, he prayed to God for deliverance. He acknowledged his distress and how God had heard his cry. Jonah’s prayer was one of repentance and gratitude, and he expressed hope that God would deliver him from his predicament.
Jonah 2:2 (RSV):
“I called to the Lord, out of my distress,
and he answered me;
out of the belly of Sheol I cried,
and thou didst hear my voice.”
Jonah’s prayer focuses on his desire to be saved from death and to be restored.
