Peter instructs the elders to be true shepherds of God’s flock. He outlines three specific ways they should lead:They should serve not because they feel forced or obligated, but willingly, as God would have them do. They should not lead for "shameful gain" or selfish profit, but out of a genuine desire to serve the community. Elders must not "lord it over" those entrusted to them. Instead of using their authority to dominate, they should be living examples of Christian character for the flock to follow.
Peter's primary instruction to the younger men and women is one of submission. He tells them to be subject to the elders. This implies a respect for the experience, wisdom, and spiritual authority of those who have been appointed to lead the church. To bridge the gap between both groups, Peter gives a final instruction that applies to everyone: "Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another." * He supports this by quoting Proverbs: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." * By "clothing" themselves in humility, both the elders and the youths create an environment where pride cannot cause division, ensuring a healthy and productive relationship.
