(a)
In the early Church, there was a strong spirit of unity and communal sharing. Believers who owned land or houses would sell them and bring the proceeds to the Apostles' feet to be distributed to those in need. Notable among these was Barnabas, who sold a field and gave the full amount. Inspired by the prestige of this act, a couple named Ananias and Sapphira decided to do the same, but with a deceptive motive.
Ananias, with his wife Sapphira’s full knowledge and consent, sold a piece of property. However, they secretly kept back a portion of the money for themselves while bringing the remainder to the Apostles, presenting it as though it were the entire sale price.
By the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, Peter discerned the deceit. He asked Ananias why he had allowed Satan to fill his heart to lie to the Holy Spirit. Peter pointed out that the land belonged to Ananias before he sold it, and the money was his to use as he wished after the sale. The sin was not in keeping part of the money, but in the lie—claiming they were giving everything to appear more pious than they were. Peter noted, "You have not lied to man but to God."
As soon as Ananias heard these words, he fell down and died. Great fear gripped everyone who heard about it. Some young men came forward, wrapped his body, and took him out to be buried.
About three hours later, Sapphira came in, unaware of what had happened to her husband. Peter gave her an opportunity to tell the truth, asking, "Tell me whether you sold the land for so much?" She persisted in the lie, saying, "Yes, for so much." Peter rebuked her for agreeing with her husband to test the Spirit of the Lord. He told her that the feet of those who buried her husband were at the door. Immediately, she fell at his feet and died. She was buried beside her husband.
