Explanation

(a)

The construction of the Temple in Jerusalem was the crowning achievement of King Solomon’s reign. However, Israel lacked certain raw materials and technical architectural expertise required for such a magnificent structure. Solomon successfully addressed these needs by maintaining and strengthening the diplomatic alliance initiated by his father, David, with King Hiram of Tyre. This partnership became the backbone of the Temple’s successful completion.

The most significant contribution of the diplomatic relation was the supply of high-quality timber. Tyre, a Phoenician city-state, had access to the famous Cedars of Lebanon. Solomon sent a message to Hiram requesting cedar and cypress logs. Hiram agreed to harvest the trees and float them down the coast in rafts to a place designated by Solomon (Joppa). In return for the timber, Solomon provided Tyre with agricultural products, including large quantities of wheat and pure olive oil. This "food-for-timber" trade was a classic example of mutually beneficial diplomacy.

Beyond materials, the relation provided the "intellectual capital" needed for the project. The Phoenicians were renowned as the master builders and craftsmen of the ancient world. At Solomon’s request, Hiram sent a highly skilled artisan also named Hiram (or Huram-abi). He was a bronze-work expert who was responsible for casting the two great bronze pillars (Jachin and Boaz), the Bronze Sea, and various ornate vessels for the temple. Hiram’s skilled loggers worked alongside Solomon’s forced labour units. This allowed for a transfer of skill, ensuring that the stone-cutting and wood-carving met the highest aesthetic standards.

Diplomacy ensured that the borders between Israel and the Phoenician states remained peaceful. Because Solomon maintained a "covenant of brotherhood" with Hiram, he did not have to divert resources or manpower toward defending the northern border. This stability allowed the nation to focus its entire economic and physical energy on the seven-year construction period.

The relationship between Tyre and Israel demonstrates that the Temple was not just a national project, but an international collaboration. It highlights Solomon's wisdom in using diplomacy to bridge the gap between Israel’s spiritual vision and Tyre’s physical resources. Ultimately, the partnership ensured that the Temple was built with the finest materials and craftsmanship available in the ancient Near East.

Diplomatic relations refer to the formal, official interactions and communication channels maintained between sovereign states. These relations are managed through embassies, consulates and international organisations. In an increasingly globalised world, diplomacy serves as the primary tool for nations to achieve their foreign policy objectives without resorting to armed conflict.

One of the most critical benefits of diplomatic relations is the prevention of war and the maintenance of global stability. Diplomacy provides a platform for dialogue, negotiation, and mediation. When disputes arise over borders, resources, or political ideologies, diplomatic channels allow leaders to reach compromises and sign peace treaties rather than engaging in military confrontation. Through diplomatic ties, nations can form alliances and sign non-aggression pacts. This cooperation helps in tackling transnational threats such as terrorism, piracy, and the proliferation of dangerous weapons, ensuring a safer environment for all citizens.

Diplomatic relations are essential for a country's economic prosperity, as they facilitate international trade and investment. Strong diplomatic ties often lead to the signing of bilateral or multilateral trade agreements. These agreements reduce tariffs, eliminate trade barriers, and open up new markets for a country’s goods and services, thereby boosting the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Countries with stable diplomatic relations are more likely to attract Foreign Direct Investment (FDI). Furthermore, diplomacy allows developing nations to access technical assistance, grants, and loans from international financial institutions and partner nations, which are vital for infrastructure development and poverty reduction.

In conclusion, diplomatic relations are the lifeblood of the international system. By fostering peace and enabling economic cooperation, diplomacy ensures that nations can coexist harmoniously while pursuing their respective developmental goals. Without these formal ties, the world would likely descend into isolationism and frequent violent conflicts.
