This instruction is found in 2 Corinthians 2:10-11. Paul encourages the church to forgive and comfort an individual who had caused grief to the community. He explains that forgiveness is necessary "in order that Satan might not outwit us; for we are not unaware of his schemes." Paul's concern was that bitterness or lack of mercy would create a foothold for spiritual division within the church.
