In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus sends out seventy (or seventy-two) disciples to prepare the way for Him. In Jewish tradition, 70 was the number of the nations of the world (from Genesis 10). While the "Twelve" often symbolised a mission to the twelve tribes of Israel, the "Seventy" signifies the universal reach of the Gospel to the Gentiles and all nations.
