Explanation

(a) Luke's gospel emphasises the rigorous demands of discipleship through various teachings and encounters. Key pages include:

1. Luke 9:23-24; Jesus states, "If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it." This passage emphasizes self - denial and a willingness to endure suffering.

2. Luke 9:57-62; Jesus addresses three pontential disciples:

- To the first he says, “Foxes have holes and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” indicating the need for readiness to face hardship.

- Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and preach the kingdom of God.” emphasizing the urgency and priority of the mission.

- The third also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go and bid them farewell who are at my house.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” Highlighting the necessity of undivided focus and commitment.

3. Luke 14:26-27;  “If anyone comes to Me and does not hate his father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and his own life also, he cannot be My disciple.  And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple." This underscores the absolute prioritization of following Jesus over all other relationships and personal interests.

4. Luke 14:33; " So likewise, whoever of you does not forsake all that he has cannot be My disciple." This passage stresses the need to renounce pssesions and personal ties for the sake of discipleship.

5. Luke 18: 22;  So when Jesus heard these things, He said to him, “You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have and distribute to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” This indicates that true discipleship involves a radical reodering of ones life and priorities. In summary, Lukes gospel presents discipleship as demanding total commitment, self denil, prioritization of Jesus above all else and readiness to endure hardship and sacrifice.
