(a) Give an account of the incident that made the Jews describe King Cyrus of Persia as the Lord's anointed.
(b) Identify three ways by which immigrants can contribute to the welfare of their host nation.
(a) The jews described King Cyrus of persia as the Lord's anointed because of his decisive role in ending the babylonian captivity and facilitating their return to jerusalem to rebuild the temple. This significant event was prophesied by Isaiah and Jeremiah and fulfilled through Cyrus's actions.
PROPHECY OF ISAIAH
Long before the events unfolded, the prophet Isaiah prophesied about Cyrus, naming him specifically as God's chosen instrument to restore Israel. isaiah 45: 1 - 4. This is what the Lord says to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I take hold of to subdue nations before him and to strip kings of their armor,
to open doors before him so that gates will not be shut, I will go before you and will level the mountains, I will break down gates of bronze and cut through bars of iron, I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places, so that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name. For the sake of Jacob my servant, of Israel my chosen, I summon you by name and bestow on you a title of honor, though you do not acknowledge me."
CYRUS DECREE
In 539 B.C, Cyrus the great conqured babylon. in his first year as ruler over the babylonian empire, he issued a decree that allowed the jewish exiles to return to jerusalem and rebuild the temple. this decree was seen as the fulfilment of isaiah's prophecy and marked cyrus as the Lord's anointed. Ezra 1: 1 - 4; "In the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the Lord spoken by Jeremiah, the Lord moved the heart of Cyrus king of Persia to make a proclamation throughout his realm and also to put it in writing: “This is what Cyrus king of Persia says: “‘The Lord, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth and he has appointed me to build a temple for him at Jerusalem in Judah. Any of his people among you may go up to Jerusalem in Judah and build the temple of the Lord, the God of Israel, the God who is in Jerusalem, and may their God be with them. And in any locality where survivors may now be living, the people are to provide them with silver and gold, with goods and livestock, and with freewill offerings for the temple of God in Jerusalem.
THE ROLE OF JEREMIAH'S PROPHECY
The prophecy of Isaiah was complemented by Jeremiah's prophecy, which predicted the end of the babylonian exile after 70 years. Cyrus decree aligned with the timeline given by Jeremiah further solidifying the belief that cyrus was divinely appointed. Jeremiah 25:11-12; "This whole country will become a desolate wasteland, and these nations will serve the king of Babylon seventy years. But when the seventy years are fulfilled, I will punish the king of Babylon and his nation, the land of the Babylonians, for their guilt, declares the Lord, and will make it desolate forever. Jeremiah 29:10; "This is what the Lord says: “When seventy years are completed for Babylon, I will come to you and fulfill my good promise to bring you back to this place."
