Why did Jesus refer to the story of Jonah in his discussion with scribes and Pharisees?
In Matthew 12:38-40, when the scribes and Pharisees asked Jesus for a sign, He referred to the story of Jonah as a foreshadowing of His own death and resurrection. Jesus said:
"For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
This comparison highlighted the parallel between Jonah's experience and Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection after three days.
