You are provided with five gas jars containing SO2, CO2, H2, CO and NO respectively. Select a test from A to E which will identify ANY ONE of the gases completely
pass each gas into lime water
pass each gas into water and test with litmus paper
pass each gas into concentrated sulphuric acid
expose each gas to atmospheric air
expose each gas to fumes of hydrogen chloride

The answer is actually D. Option A is a trap because most people don't know that SO2 also reacts with lime water to form an insoluble precipitate that is similar to the milky precipitate formed by CO2.
D is the only option that will distinguish just one of the gases from the rest.

the answer is A or D cuz when CO2 dissolves in lime water it turns milky which is a test for the gas CO2. Well when NO is exposed to the atmosphere, reddish brown fumes are formed due to the oxidation of the gas and this is also a test for the gas NO

The only gas mentioned which would react with lime water is Carbon(iv) oxide (turning it milky), therefore it would identify the gas distinctively from the rest

but what will happen to co, is it going to turn milky too or what or no effect at all

the correct answer is D because SO2 also reacts with Ca(OH)2 to form calcium sulfite CaSO3 which is a white insoluble precipitate

i really don't understand the question. Do they mean a test that identifies each of the or only one of the listed compounds?

the answer is d because the question said completely and A is used for co2 and co
but D is used for NO
NO+o2=NO2 my school take note
