Double decomposition (also known as a precipitation reaction) is the standard laboratory method for preparing insoluble salts. In this process, two soluble salts are mixed in aqueous solution; their ions exchange partners to form one soluble product and one insoluble solid (precipitate).
Silver chloride (AgCl) is a highly insoluble salt. It is typically prepared by reacting two soluble solutions, such as silver nitrate (AgNO\(_3\)) and sodium chloride (NaCl).
AgNO\(_3\) + NaCl → AgCl + NaNO\(_3\)
