Carbon(IV)oxide, commonly known as carbon dioxide (CO\(_2\)), is the primary gas used in fire extinguishers because it is non-combustible and denser than air. When released, it displaces the oxygen surrounding the fire, effectively "suffocating" the flames by removing one of the three essential components (fuel, heat, and oxygen) needed for combustion.
