Both H3PO4 (phosphoric acid) and NH4Cl (ammonium chloride) are acidic in solution, but we can say NH4Cl is more acidic due to the hydrolysis of the ammonium ion. H3PO4 (phosphoric acid) is acidic in solution as well. It's a weak acid, meaning it doesn't fully dissociate into ions when dissolved in water.
Consequently, we can go for option B.

Thank you all for your contributions. It is well appreciated.

myschool the right answer to this question is option B....

When ammonium chloride (NH₄Cl) dissociates, it breaks down into ammonia (NH₃) and hydrogen chloride (HCl) gases

The correct answer is: B. NH₄Cl

Here's why:

A. H₃₃PO₄₄ – This appears to be a typo or incorrectly written formula. The correct formula for phosphoric acid is H₃PO₄, which is acidic, but as written (H₃₃PO₄₄), it is invalid.

B. NH₄Cl (ammonium chloride) – This is acidic in solution. It comes from a weak base (NH₃) and a strong acid (HCl), so its solution is acidic.

C. Na₂CO₃ (sodium carbonate) – This is basic in solution because it comes from a strong base (NaOH) and a weak acid (H₂CO₃).

D. MgCl₂ (magnesium chloride) – This is neutral or slightly acidic, but not strongly acidic. It’s a salt of a strong acid (HCl) and a weak base (Mg(OH)₂), but its hydrolysis effect is minimal compared to NH₄Cl.

So, the best and most clearly acidic compound in solution is NH₄Cl (B).

Correct answer is A. H3PO4. Ph value of 1 molar solution of H3PO4 is much lower than Ph value of 1 molar solution of ammonium chloride. The hydrogen ion being the only positive ion in H3PO4 is a clear definition of acidity. Let's keep it simple and clear.

Calm down, Isn't Ammonium Hyrdroxide a weak base.

When you hydrolyse NH4Cl, by principle, don't you get HCL and NH4OH? HCl in this case is a strong acid while NH4OH is a weak base.

So?...

Abeg tell these guys the answer is meant to be B.

With this type of question let's look at the definition of acid as a substance which ionize to give H+ ion as the only positive ion

H3PO4 ionize to give 3H+

With this type of question let's look at the definition of acid as a substance which ionize to give H+ ion as the only positive ion

H3PO4 ionize to give 3H+ + PO4³-
NH4CL ionize to give NH4+ + CL-

Option A is the correct answer

Greetings, The Myschool Team.
The correct answer is B(NH4Cl) and not A(H3PO4). The question is based on hydrolysis. While phosphoric acid is indeed an acid, it isn't acidic only in solution, making it less appropriate. However, ammonium chloride dissociates or hydrolyzes in water to form ammonium hydroxide(a weak base) and hydrochloric acid (a strong acid). The difference in ionization between both compounds makes the solution acidic and this makes it fit in better as the answer. Thus, ammonium chloride (B) is the best answer. Thank you.

it's supposed to be ammonium chloride
