🔬 What is Sulphur(IV) oxide (SO₂)?
It's a colorless gas with a pungent smell.

It's acidic, dissolves in water to form sulphurous acid (H₂SO₃).

It is a reducing agent and also acts as a preservative in some food industries.

❌ Why NOT a drying agent?
Even though SO₂ is a gas, it is not used to dry other substances.

In fact, SO₂ itself is a moist gas — it reacts with water to form an acid.

So using it to dry things? Nah! That would be wrong.

✅ Actual drying agents include:

Quicklime (CaO) – for drying ammonia

Conc. H₂SO₄ – for drying most gases (but not ammonia)

Phosphorus(V) oxide (P₂O₅) – very strong drying agent

✅ Correct function of SO₂?
Here’s where SO₂ shines:

Used as a bleaching agent (for delicate materials like straw, silk)

Acts as a preservative (in wine, dried fruits)

Used in making sulphuric acid

Acts as a refrigerant in old refrigeration systems

So, the best and correct answer to the question:
Sulphur(IV) oxide can be used as a:

𝐶
.
refrigerant
C.refrigerant

🔁 Correction Summary:
Drying agent? ❌ No — it absorbs moisture and forms acid.

Refrigerant? ✅ Yes — historically used in early cooling systems

SO2 is used as a refrigerant for food preservation due to the fact that is easily condensed and possessing a high heat of evaporation.

It doesn't act as a dehydrating agent as it doesn't absorb water from any substance.
N:B--Dehydrating agent are like H2SO4 and P4O10 not SO2.
So my school is correct 💯 ✅.

But when they did mock they said it was for a bleaching agent

The correct answer is:

B. Dehydrating agent

Explanation:
Sulphur(IV) oxide, also known as sulfur dioxide (SO₂), acts as a dehydrating agent because it can remove water from substances. It is commonly used in industries for drying fruits and as a preservative in food processing.

It is also used in the production of sulfuric acid and as a bleaching agent, but its ability to remove moisture makes it a dehydrating agent.

The correct answer is:

B. Dehydrating agent

Sulphur(IV) oxide (SO₂) can act as a dehydrating agent because it has the ability to remove water from certain substances. It is also commonly used as a preservative in the food industry and as a bleaching agent.

The correct answer is B. dehydrating agent.

Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) is commonly used as a dehydrating agent because it has the ability to remove water from substances. It is also used as a preservative and in various chemical processes.Sulfur dioxide (SO₂) can also be used as a refrigerant. In the past, it was used as a refrigerant in refrigeration systems, particularly in the early 20th century. However, it is not commonly used today due to its toxicity, corrosiveness, and environmental impact. Modern refrigerants like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) have largely replaced sulfur dioxide in refrigeration applications.

So, while sulfur dioxide has been used as a refrigerant, its primary function today is more commonly associated with being a dehydrating agent.

The correct answer is:

B. Dehydrating agent

Sulphur(IV) oxide (SO₂) is a gas that can remove water from substances, making it a dehydrating agent. It is commonly used in the food and beverage industry as a preservative because it prevents microbial growth by absorbing moisture.
