Soaps use the principle of surface tension to clean surfaces.
Surface tension is that property of water through which it acts like an elastic membrane.
When soap is added, it lowers the surface tension of water.

From Hydrocarbons we learnt that saops have a hydrophilic tail and hydrophobic head

The hydrophilic head is insoluble in water and it reacts with the stains to make them insoluble that's why the water changes colour after washing dirty clothes after gentle rubbing
