carbon monoxide(CO) is obtained from carbon dioxide (CO2)by reducing the CO2 with hot carbon.But the product formed would still contained some amount of unreacted CO2 as well as the CO. so in order to obtain pure CO , the product is passed through a strong alkali(NAOH).Since CO2 is acidic, it would react with the NAOH to form sodium carbonate (liquid)while the CO would be collected purely since it's neutral and wouldn't react with the NAOH.
