But-1-yne is a terminal alkyne, that is, its carbon-carbon triple bond is attached to the farest carbon of its chain. For this reason, the hydrogen attached to this carbon we talking about becomes labile, i.e, acidic, making it susceptible to attack by reagents. Most of this reactions involves the substition of this acidic hydrogen. Also note that terminal alkynes behave similarly to normal acids.

all alkyne group undergo this reaction but only alkyne compound that have their triple bond at the end of their carbon chain. refer to new school chemistry (page;537)
