Test tubes are not used to measure volume because they’re not made for accuracy.
Here’s why:
1. No precise graduations: Most test tubes have no markings at all. The ones that do usually only have rough lines like 5 mL, 10 mL, 15 mL. Those marks are approximate and can be off by 10% or more.
2. Shape problems: The curved bottom and varying diameter make the volume per height change. In a graduated cylinder or burette, the cross-section is uniform so 1 mm of height = same volume all the way up. In a test tube, that’s not true.
3. Wrong purpose: Test tubes are designed for holding, mixing, and heating small samples. Lab glassware for measuring volume is calibrated at specific temperatures and built to strict tolerances. That’s your graduated cylinders, pipettes, burettes, and volumetric flasks.
