An organic compound has the empirical formula \(CH_{2}\). If its molar mass is 42\(gmol^{-1}\), what is its molecular formula?  (C = 12.0, H = 1.0)

a

\(C_{2}H_{4}\)

b

\(C_{3}H_{4}\)

c

MF = (Ef)n
MF =42
Ef = CH2
42 =(CH2)n
42 =(12+ 1*2)n
42 = (14)n
Divide both side by 14
42/14 =(14)n/14
n =3
Remeber {Ef]n
(CH2)n and n is 3
so (CH2)3 = C3H6
