The ans is way because without water chlorine can not react to release that nascent Oxyfen which will now perform the bleaching process. There is no how you can start talking of importance of the hand without talking about that of the head. Assuming there is no water in the option, you can then choose Oxygen but since there is water there that's the ans.

Thanks for all your contributions. All well noted. However, the answer given as option B -Water, is actually the correct answer. This is because it involves the process of oxidation as Chlorine reacts with water to produce nascent oxygen which combines with the material to be bleached. Therefore, it is the presence of water that makes the bleaching action of Chlorine gas effective. Thanks

Chlorine i know beaches by oxidation(addition of Oxygen) so why water? Water is necceesassry for evry bleaching weather SO2 H2S. but Oxygen is essential for chlorine to bleach

The bleaching action of chlorine gas is effective due to the presence of **B. Water**. When chlorine gas comes into contact with water, it forms hydrochloric acid and hypochlorous acid. The hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a powerful oxidizing agent and is primarily responsible for the bleaching action. So, the correct answer is **B. Water**.

The bleaching action of Chlorine is due to its ability to react with water to form oxochlorate (I) acid.
The latter is unstable and decomposes to release oxygen which oxidizes to form a colourless compound.

Option B is valid. ✅

The selected answer is correct. It is water
Dry chlorine gas will not bleach; water is needed to produce the bleaching agent HClO(aq)

it react with the oxygen in water, not with the water it self.... it react with oxygen to form oxochlorate

the answer is not B!! the answer is A
the bleaching effect of chlorine is only effective due to the presence of hydrogen chloride gas (hclo)!!!
take note ohhh abeg

for those wondering why it isn't oxygen but water

The answer is B water
because for the bleaching power of oxygen to be activated it needs water not oxygen

And again nascent oxygen is responsible for the bleaching not ordinary oxygen

please don't be deceive the answer is water
