As hard water is passed through the permutit, the sodium ions will go into solution while the unwanted calcium or magnesium ions take their place in the complex salt and precipitate as shown below

2Na-permutit + Ca²⁺→Ca-(permutit)₂+ 2Na⁺

NB: The calcium permutit is insoluble and it precipitates out of solution

When the permutit is being used up, it can be regenerated by pouring a strong solution of common salt through the resin

NaCl + Ca-(permutit)₂ → 2Na-permutit + CaCl
