D. sulphur is an element commonly used in the production of matches. When struck against a rough surface, the tip of a match ignites due to a chemical reaction between the sulphur and the potassium chlorate or perchlorate that is present in the match head. This reaction produces heat, which in turn ignites the phosphorus sesquisulfide or other flammable material in the match head, creating a flame.
