My school u have to change this answer for some students that will bliv all they see, the correct and is 4-ethyl Octane, count the longest continuous chain..
The one in bracket is CH2 CH2 CH2, then the C3H7 is (CH2 CH2 CH3) now join the other two carbon atom, the first carbon atom on the left hand side and the other One that C3H7 is attached to. Making the longest continuous chain 8. That is 4-ethylOctane.
Pls my school correct this.

The right ans is 4-ethyl octane (OPTION A).because we are to count d longest continuous carbon chain whether it Bends or not.

The answer is both A and D. My textbook said A but when I did mine, I got D. I researched for it on the Internet and I got that the correct name for 3-propylheptane is 4-ethyloctane. Jamb is smart that's why they gave these two options. But I will go with A since it's more correct and appropriate than D. If 4-ethyl octane wasn't among the options, then I will go with option D.

Myschool is right, the correct answer is A.
You count from the longest carbon chain....and doing this, the ethyl group lies on the fourth carbon.
Also, the total number of carbon in the chain is 8 which makes the right answer 4-ethyloctane.

I don't see how A becomes the answer.....lest we forget,the when naming substituents they are given the lowest possible number.... counting from right to left where the chain is branched is no 3....but from left to right it falls at no 5.....then counting the number of carbon molecules there.... it's seven, not ten....the branched carbon molecules are not counted along with the carbon molecules in the straight chain.....so the answer is D not A
