My school u have to change this answer for some students that will bliv all they see, the correct and is 4-ethyl Octane, count the longest continuous chain..
The one in bracket is CH2 CH2 CH2, then the C3H7 is (CH2 CH2 CH3) now join the other two carbon atom, the first carbon atom on the left hand side and the other One that C3H7 is attached to. Making the longest continuous chain 8. That is 4-ethylOctane.
Pls my school correct this.

de and is d

The right ans is 4-ethyl octane (OPTION A).because we are to count d longest continuous carbon chain whether it Bends or not.

The answer is both A and D. My textbook said A but when I did mine, I got D. I researched for it on the Internet and I got that the correct name for 3-propylheptane is 4-ethyloctane. Jamb is smart that's why they gave these two options. But I will go with A since it's more correct and appropriate than D. If 4-ethyl octane wasn't among the options, then I will go with option D.

A is the correct answer
Remember we're counting the longest carbon atoms not necessarily the linear one

The answer is very clear, which is D. Counting from the right side.

Yap, rewrite the structure, i mean break it to d simplest lyk turning (CH2)3 to CH2-CH2-CH2..., i'm sure u wil get it. Correct this answer to 3-propyl heptane @ myschool

Myschool is right, the correct answer is A.

You count from the longest carbon chain....and doing this, the ethyl group lies on the fourth carbon.

Also, the total number of carbon in the chain is 8 which makes the right answer 4-ethyloctane.

I hope this is explanative enough!

Here is an explanation:

the correct answer is 3-propyl heptane

I don't see how A becomes the answer.....lest we forget, the when naming substituents they are given the lowest possible number.... counting from right to left where the chain is branched is no 3....but from left to right it falls at no 5.....then counting the number of carbon molecules there.... it's seven, not ten....the branched carbon molecules are not counted along with the carbon molecules in the straight chain.....so the answer is D not A

Let’s name the structure correctly using proper IUPAC rules.
(Ignore what the app chose β€” we will verify it step-by-step.)

---

STEP 1: Identify the longest carbon chain

From the structure:

CH₃ – (CHβ‚‚)₃ – CH – CHβ‚‚CHβ‚…
                  |
                C₃H₇

Let’s count the longest continuous chain:

CH₃ (1)

CHβ‚‚ (2)

CHβ‚‚ (3)

CHβ‚‚ (4)

CH (5)

CHβ‚‚ (6)

CH₃ (7)

This gives 7 carbons, so the parent chain is heptane, not octane.

So the base name is heptane, not octane.

---

STEP 2: Identify the substituent

Attached to carbon 5 is C₃H₇, which is a propyl group (3-carbon substituent).

---

STEP 3: Number from the end that gives the lowest locant

Numbering from the left:

Substituent falls on C-5
Numbering from the right gives C-3, but that route breaks the long chain, so 5-propyl is correct.

---

Correct Name

βœ… 5-propylheptane

---

Correct answer: Option C β€” 5-propylheptane

The app’s answer (4-ethyloctane) is incorrect, because the longest chain is 7 carbons, not 8.

If you want, I can draw the chain breakdown to show why it’s heptane.

The answer is A.

The answer is A.When counting to know the parent chain hydrocarbon, u count the longest chain hydrocarbon and the longest is counting from the left but when counting the position of the substituent, u allocate the lowest number to it.
