An alkali is a basic hydroxide or ionic salt of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal element, which is soluble in water. Only few alkalis are known, examples, sodium hydroxide (NaOH), potassium hydroxide (KOH), calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), calcium carbonate (CaCO3), and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2. Ammonia is also classified as an alkali, though it is not a hydroxide or ionic salt. This is because ammonia is a very soluble base.

First of all what is an alkali?
An alkali is a base that is soluble in water.
An hydroxide is different from an alkali.
Its an oxide of a metal with an hydroxyl ion (OH^-)
NH3 is a alkali altho its a weak one
Why?
Cos it's a base (has a PH greater than 7) and it's soluble in water.
The correct answer is D

D is correct. why ?

Alkaline substances are those that have a pH greater than 7. Among the options you provided, Al(OH)3 (option D) is not an alkali; it's an amphoteric hydroxide.

Nh3 (ammonia) is an alkali, even though it is not an alkali metal or an alkali earth metal it is special, due to its ability to readily dissolve in water, therefore the answer is D Al(OH)3 ... Dont believe me? Check the net
