You know it is an electrovalent or ionic bonding when the elements are nonmetal (grp 1 -3) and metals (4----) as it is in the question..
2,8,2 =12 tells you it's Magnesium in grp 2(last no in 2,8,2) period 3
2,8,7 =17 tells you it's Chlorine in group 7 (last no in 2,8,7) period 3..
So C Electrovalent bond is the correct answer.....
