Ammonia is the only alkaline gas Wich when dissolved in water will form ammonium hydroxide which is alkaline in nature..

NH3(g)+H2O(l)----> NH4OH(aq)

NH4OH+HCl---> NH4Cl + H2O

Recall that acid+ base gives salt and water and that is called neutralization reaction..

So have you seen that ammonia react with water to give and alkaline solution, which later react with hydrochloric acid to give ammonium chloride as a salt ...
