Its amphoteric cuz it loses its oxygen on sublimation
amphoteric oxide are those that posseses characteristic of both acidic and a basic oxide.also when oxygen react with moderate ,least or slightly soluble metals thy form amphoteric oxide.e.gmg,Al,zn for moderate and pb,sn for least soluble metals.

Here is an explanation:

An amphoteric oxide is an oxide that shows both acidic and alkaline properties. It react with acid or base to give salt and water as the product. Zinc oxide is an amphoteric oxide because it can react with both acid and base to give salt and water as the only product.

Amphoteric oxides are just oxide of metal that has both acidic and basic properties and will also dissolve in excess sodium hydroxide. Some eg are Aluminium oxide, Zinc oxide ,Oxides of lead and tin.

Zinc has the ability to gives out it's electron and also has the ability to gain electron, depending on the reaction. According to T Bronsted, an acid is any substance that gives out an electron and a base is a substance that accept an electron! Owing to this definition, zinc is amphoteric!
