Explanation

- potassium chlorate --> KClO\(_3\)

valencies of K = +1, O = -2.

: (+1) + Cl + ( -2  X 3 atoms ) = 0

Cl + 1 - 6 = 0

Cl = 5

∴ The oxidation state of chlorine in potassium chlorate is +5
