Hydrogen combine with fluorine to give hydrogen fluoride. In this process, hydrogen shares its 1 valence electron with fluorine which has 7 valence electrons so that both can attain the stable duplet and octet structure. By so doing 3 pairs (6) electrons are left unshared. These set of unshared electrons are referred to as lone pairs. Check the picture for a better understanding. Hope this explanation helps.
